(footwork) (fencing) (from the french: (lit) ‘to call’)
A sound made with the foot. Typically striking the ground with the ball of the leading foot. The appel is usually intended to surprise your opponent, or as part of a salute or reverence.
Variations include:
‘rear foot’ appel
