COURSE DESCRIPTION

Basic Course (Level 1):
Weapon Systems - Unarmed Combat, Rapier & Dagger, Single Sword (Pointwork)

This is the right course for people with little or no stage combat training, though they may have the benefit of other form of combat training, (eg-sport fencers, martial artists, re enactors, etc). Level 1 covers the basic techniques of the three weapon systems commonly found in the British theatre and the resulting level of certification is the most widely held stage combat qualification in the UK. If you have no previous stage combat qualification then this is the course you should take.

Intermediate/Advanced (Level 2/3):
Weapons- Medieval Broadsword, Renaissance Sword and Buckler, and Quarterstaff

This is the right course for people who have completed a certification in stage combat before, though it may have been with the BADC, BASSC, SAFD, FDC, SAuFD, NSFS or any other internationally recognized body which qualifies actor/combatants.

ELIGIBILITY
This course is for professional and pre-professional actors. No previous fencing or martial arts combat training is required. The course does require at least a reasonable level of fitness as it requires 6 hours of physical training daily.

To be automatically eligible you must be a working actor; or currently training to work as a professional actor. You are automatically eligible if you meet any of the following criteria: you are a member of UK Equity or a similar union abroad, have attended or attend a recognized drama school or training program such as an NCDT Drama School or the Actors Temple, or are featured in Spotlight.

You can also be eligible if you have a recommendation from your previous stage combat teacher and have at least a silver medal or above in your previous stage combat grade.

If you fulfill none of these requirements you can still apply. You will need to email a cover letter introducing yourself. You may be required to interview. This is often the route taken by directors, dancers and similar performers who wish to attend our courses.

Once the course begins, students will, of course, be under continuous evaluation by the staff. If for whatever reason your progress is not satisfactory, safe, or professional you may be asked to leave the course. It is not YoungBlood's policy to offer a refunds in these instances.

ABOUT ALL COURSES:
The exams for ALL courses are performance-based and, as such, require the candidates to incorporate a text into their fight routines. Additionally, YoungBlood maintains a file of suitable texts covering a broad range of characters and situations. This file will be made available to all participants.

IMPORTANT – Regardless of which course you register for, the demands of a workshop such as this are extremely high, particularly physically, and should only be attempted by individuals who are reasonably fit and healthy. You don't have to be an Olympic athlete, but the more fit you are the more you get out of the workshop.

Also, it would be unfortunate if an old injury or condition were aggravated by the stresses of the workshop. There will be comprehensive warm-ups each morning, and all participants will be required to sign a risk acknowledgement form.
